Faced with the need for a compact monitor capable of critical sound quality assessment in the confined spaces of Outside Broadcasting (OB) vehicles and control rooms, the BBC found no suitable options on the market. Coincidentally, a different research initiative exploring the acoustic scaling of studios had yielded a small loudspeaker prototype. This discovery led to the realization that with further development, this prototype could be repurposed for monitoring purposes. Thus, after considerable refinement, the inaugural LS3/5 model was created.
