Join us for another inspiring edition of our beloved 'Vinyl Vibes Sunday', this time exploring the vibrant musical landscapes of Afro-Cuban Jazz and the enticing rhythms of Brazilian Bossa Nova.
Journey through Afro-Cuban Rhythms and Brazilian Melodies
This unique session will unfold in two distinct parts:
Afro-Cuban Jazz: Begin your musical journey by discovering jazz artists who infused their sounds with Afro-Cuban influences. Although Cuban rhythms have resonated throughout jazz history, the collaborations between trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, percussionist Chano Pozo, and bandleader Mario Bauzá in the late 1940s are widely recognized as introducing mainstream jazz audiences to this rich fusion. Over subsequent decades, many jazz greats revisited Cuban rhythms, creating records bursting with vibrant mambo, cha-cha, and salsa undertones. Danny Tielemans will present an exciting selection of these vibrant records for an authentic and energetic listening experience.
Brazilian Bossa Nova: In the second half of the session, we'll shift to the smooth and captivating sounds of Brazil's 1960s Bossa Nova. While many listeners know Stan Getz’s iconic "The Girl from Ipanema" performed with João and Astrud Gilberto, there's an extensive musical world waiting to be explored. Originating as a blend of Brazilian samba and Californian cool jazz, Bossa Nova’s gentle melodies and sophisticated rhythms inspired numerous jazz musicians worldwide. Danny Tielemans has carefully curated a selection of exceptional tracks to share, offering fresh insights into this timeless genre.
